What to Expect: Your First Acupuncture Session

Before We Meet

Parents, you have the option of scheduling a private phone or video call with me before your teen's first in-person visit. This gives us a chance to talk through health history and any sensitive topics you'd like to discuss one-on-one—or we can all meet together from the start. Whatever feels right for your family works for me.

Your First Appointment

Teens, here's what will happen when you come in:

I'll listen to you. We'll talk about what's going on—whether it's stress, pain, period problems, anxiety, or anything else—and what you're hoping to feel better about. This is your time, and I want to hear from you.

I'll explain everything. I'll walk you through how acupuncture works in a way that actually makes sense (no confusing medical jargon, I promise). If you're nervous about needles, we'll talk about that too.

You can ask anything. Seriously—no question is off-limits. If you're wondering if it hurts, how long it takes, or what those needles actually do, just ask.

I'll do a quick check-in. I'll ask some questions and may check things like your pulse or look at your tongue. It's all part of figuring out the best way to help you.

We'll start treatment—at your pace. I'll only use techniques you're comfortable with. If you want to start without needles, that's totally fine. You're in control here.

You'll learn tools to use at home. I'll teach you simple things like acupressure points, breathing exercises, or other tricks you can use on your own between sessions.

Treatment Approach

I use fine, sterile acupuncture needles that are much thinner than the needles used for shots or blood draws. Most teens are surprised by how gentle and relaxing treatment feels—many even fall asleep during sessions!

For teens who are nervous about needles, we can start with non-needle techniques like:

  • Acupressure

  • Laser therapy

  • Cupping

  • Tuina massage

  • Essential oils

Sessions typically last one hour, and treatment takes place in a peaceful, calming environment designed to help your teen relax and reset.

Frequency & Results

Most teens begin with weekly sessions for 2-4 weeks, then transition to every other week as symptoms improve. Many notice positive changes after just a few treatments—better sleep, reduced anxiety, less pain, or more balanced moods.

The average teen completes about 8 sessions before moving to monthly maintenance visits. However, every teen is unique, and we'll adjust the treatment plan based on their individual response and goals.

Empowering Teens with Self-Care Tools

One of the most valuable aspects of acupuncture for teens is learning tools they can use independently. During treatment, I teach:

  • Acupressure points for the issues at hand

  • Breathing techniques for calm and focus

  • Dietary and lifestyle adjustments that support their goals

  • Herbal remedies and supplements when appropriate

  • Mind-body practices for emotional regulation

These skills empower teens to take an active role in their own wellness—building confidence and resilience that extends far beyond our sessions.

Holistic, Personalized Care

I don't just treat symptoms—I look at the whole picture. Physical health, emotional wellbeing, sleep, nutrition, stress levels, and lifestyle all play a role in how your teen feels. Together, we create a comprehensive plan that addresses their unique needs.

Privacy & Respect for Growing Independence

I understand that teens need space to express themselves honestly, especially when it comes to sensitive health topics. While parents are always welcome in the treatment room, I also offer teens the option of having part of the session one-on-one if they'd like to discuss something privately.

My approach balances parental involvement with respect for your teen's autonomy, creating a supportive environment where everyone feels heard and valued.

Collaboration with Other Providers

Acupuncture works beautifully alongside other treatments your teen may be receiving, including therapy, medication, physical therapy, or counseling. I'm happy to coordinate care with your teen's healthcare team to ensure the best outcomes.

Getting Started Is Easy

Step 1: Choose Your Booking Option

Option 1: Private Parent Consultation First (Recommended for ages 12 and under) If you'd like to discuss your teen's health history, concerns, or sensitive topics privately before the first in-person visit, book a New Pediatric Patient Initial Consult. This video or phone call gives us dedicated time to talk one-on-one, so when we meet your teen in person, I can focus entirely on connecting with them and making them comfortable.

Option 2: Everyone Together from the Start If you prefer to have the initial consultation with your teen present, book an Acupuncture Initial Visit. We'll all meet together, discuss health history and goals, and begin treatment during that first appointment.

Not sure which is right for you? Either option works beautifully—it just depends on what feels best for your family. If your teen is dealing with sensitive issues or you have questions you'd like to ask privately, Option 1 can be really helpful. If your teen is comfortable discussing everything together, Option 2 is perfect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does acupuncture hurt?

Most teens are surprised by how gentle acupuncture feels. The needles are hair-thin—much finer than needles used for shots—and most people feel little to nothing during insertion. Many teens describe the sensation as a light tingling or warmth, and most find treatment deeply relaxing, many teens fall asleep during acupuncture.

How long does each session take?

Sessions typically last fifty minutes to one hour. This includes time for check-in, treatment, and discussing at-home care strategies.

How many sessions will my teen need?

Every teen is different, and your teen’s treatment plan will be tailored to their unique situation and goals. That said, here's what we typically see:

Most teens notice improvement within 4-6 sessions. They might sleep better, feel less anxious, have less pain, or notice their mood leveling out.

We usually start with weekly visits for 2-4 weeks to build momentum and get things moving in the right direction.

Then we space out to every other week as symptoms improve and your teen starts feeling more balanced.

On average, teens complete about 8 sessions before transitioning to monthly maintenance visits—kind of like tune-ups to keep you feeling your best.

But again, this is just a general guideline. Some teens need more support, some need less. We'll adjust your teen’s plan based on how they're responding and what they need.

Can my teen come alone or should I attend?

Parents, you're always welcome to be in the treatment room, and many choose to attend—especially for the first visit. However, I've found that teens often share more openly and feel more comfortable discussing sensitive topics when they have some privacy during their sessions.

Whether it's anxiety, relationship stress, menstrual concerns, or other personal issues, having one-on-one time can help your teen feel safe opening up without worrying about how you might react or what you're thinking.

That said, every family is different, and I always go with what feels right for you. Some families prefer to be together the whole time, others like a mix—maybe parents join for check-in and then step out during treatment. Some teens come independently from the start.

We're completely flexible and will work with whatever arrangement supports your teen best while honoring your family's needs and comfort level.

Will acupuncture interfere with other treatments?

No. Acupuncture is safe to use alongside medication, therapy, physical therapy, and other treatments. In fact, it often enhances the effectiveness of other care your teen is receiving.

How Should My Teen Prepare for Their Acupuncture Appointment?

Good news—there's not much you need to do to get ready! Here are a few simple tips to help your teen get the most out of their session:

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes. Teens, think yoga pants, sweatpants, t-shirts, or anything with sleeves and pant legs that can easily roll up. I'll need access to areas like your arms, legs, back, and sometimes your abdomen, so clothing that's easy to adjust works best. Avoid tight jeans or anything restrictive.

Eat something beforehand. Don't come on an empty stomach! Have a light meal or snack 1-2 hours before your appointment. Acupuncture works better when your body has some fuel, and it helps prevent lightheadedness.

Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water before and after your session. Hydration supports your body's natural healing process and helps you feel your best.

Avoid caffeine right before. Teens, if possible, skip the energy drinks or coffee an hour or two before your appointment. Caffeine can make it harder to relax during treatment, and we want you to be able to fully unwind.

Come with an open mind. If you're nervous, that's completely normal! Just show up as you are, and we'll take it from there. There's no "right" way to feel, and I'll make sure you're comfortable every step of the way.

Bring a list of questions or concerns. Teens, if there are specific things you want to address—like sleep issues, anxiety, cramps, headaches, or pain—jot them down on your phone or a piece of paper so we don't forget to talk about them.

Parents: Bring any relevant health information. If your teen takes medications, supplements, or has been diagnosed with any conditions, it's helpful to have that info handy for the first visit.

That's it! The goal is for your teen to feel relaxed, comfortable, and ready to start feeling better. No need to stress about preparation—we'll handle the rest together.
