How Facial Acupuncture Works
Facial acupuncture stimulates your body's natural healing response through multiple mechanisms:
Creating Microtrauma for Healing: When tiny needles are inserted into the dermis of the skin, your body recognizes this as a "microtrauma" and activates its natural healing response. This increases blood flow and immune cells to the area, bringing oxygen and nutrients that your skin needs to heal and glow.
Boosting Collagen Production: As part of the healing process, your body sends protein to restructure and fill in the treated area. This protein is collagen—the key to lifted, smoother, more youthful-looking skin.
Toning Facial Muscles: Specialized techniques target the superficial muscles of the face (mimetic muscles of expression). Tightening these muscles creates a lifted, more sculpted, and overall younger facial appearance.
Improving Circulation: Enhanced blood flow brings oxygen and nutrients to your skin cells, promoting healing, rejuvenation, and that coveted healthy glow.
Balancing Energy: Acupuncture points throughout your body are stimulated to address underlying imbalances that affect skin health—like hormonal issues, stress, poor sleep, or digestive problems.
Supporting Lymphatic Drainage: Treatment helps reduce puffiness and promotes detoxification, giving your skin a clearer, more radiant appearance.
Facial acupuncture is surprisingly comfortable. The needles used are hair-thin—much finer than needles used for injections—and most people feel little to no discomfort. You may experience a light tingling, warmth, or slight pressure, but the overall sensation is relaxing and pleasant.
There's no downtime after treatment. You may have slight redness for an hour or two, but you can return to your normal activities immediately.
What to Expect
Before beginning your cosmetic acupuncture series, I recommend scheduling a complementary 15 minute video consultation. During this 15 minute session, we'll:
Discuss your skincare goals and concerns
Take a look at your skin
Answer all your questions
Explain what to expect from your cosmetic acupuncture series
Make sure cosmetic acupuncture is a good fit for your unique needs
Your First Treatment
Your first full treatment begins with a comprehensive assessment where we'll discuss your skin concerns, health history, lifestyle, and aesthetic goals. I'll take your pulse and look at your tongue—both part of Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis.
During treatment:
You'll relax comfortably on a heated massage table in our peaceful studio
I'll cleanse your face with all-natural, alcohol-free toner
I'll insert body points to balance internal systems, manage stress, and regulate hormones
Then I'll add facial points customized for your specific concerns
You'll rest for about 25 minutes under our Rainbow LED light in a warm, quiet room (most patients nap!)
After removing the needles, I'll apply facial serum
Treatment concludes with a gua sha facial massage
Total appointment time: 60 minutes
Gua sha facial massage is a gentle style of massage used in China for skincare for centuries. It enhances acupuncture results by improving circulation and brightening the face.
Most patients leave feeling deeply relaxed with glowing skin.
Recommended Treatment Plan
Like all types of acupuncture, cosmetic treatments are cumulative. Repeated treatments are needed to create a lasting effect.
Initial Series: 8-12 treatments over 4-6 weeks (typically 2 times per week)
Maintenance: One treatment every 4-6 weeks to maintain results
Long-term: After two years, it's recommended to repeat the full series
Every person responds differently based on age, skin condition, lifestyle, and overall health. Your individual constitution, participation in recommended lifestyle changes, and stress management all impact results.
After 1-3 treatments:
Improved skin texture and glow
Reduced puffiness
More relaxed facial muscles
Better sleep and reduced stress
Brighter, more radiant complexion
What You'll Notice
The results from cosmetic acupuncture are gradual, soft, and subtle.
Making small lifestyle adjustments during your cosmetic acupuncture series can have a big impact on your results. Your specific recommendations will depend on your overall health, individual constitution, Chinese medicine diagnosis, and current habits.
After 10-12 treatments:
Significant improvement in wrinkles and sagging
Lifted jawline and cheeks
Lasting glow and vitality
Overall transformation in skin health
Lifted brows and reduced drooping
Many patients don't realize how much their fine lines have diminished or their jawline has lifted until they compare before and after photos. For this reason we strongly recommend allowing us to take before and after photos. Photos are stored in your HIPPAA protected electronic health record and are never shared without your express written permission.
Results are cumulative and continue to improve with maintenance treatments. Unlike Botox, which wears off completely, facial acupuncture creates lasting changes by supporting your skin's natural regeneration processes.
Who Should NOT Get Facial Acupuncture?
Facial acupuncture is not recommended for:
Anyone who is pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding: In Chinese medicine, during pregnancy all the body's resources should be directed toward the baby. Cosmetic acupuncture diverts some of the body's resources and energy to the mother's face, which is not ideal for fertility or a growing baby.
Chronic migraines or headaches: If you experience chronic migraines and want to do cosmetic acupuncture, we would first do a series of general acupuncture treatments to get the migraines under control before beginning the cosmetic series.
Uncontrolled high blood pressure: Facial acupuncture is not recommended for patients with chronic, uncontrolled high blood pressure.
If you have questions about whether facial acupuncture is right for you, please reach out—we're happy to discuss your specific situation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is facial acupuncture safe?
Yes! Facial acupuncture is extremely safe when performed by a licensed, trained acupuncturist. Side effects are minimal—you may experience slight redness or minor bruising that resolves quickly.
Does it hurt?
Most people find facial acupuncture very comfortable and relaxing. The needles are hair-thin, and insertion feels like a light pinch or tingling at most. Many people fall asleep during treatment.
How long do results last?
With an initial series of 10-12 treatments followed by monthly maintenance (every 4-6 weeks), results can last for years. After two years, it's recommended to repeat the full series. Unlike Botox that wears off completely, facial acupuncture creates lasting changes by supporting your skin's natural regeneration.
Can I combine facial acupuncture with other treatments?
Yes! Facial acupuncture works beautifully alongside Holistic Microneedling, quality skincare, professional facials, and other non-invasive treatments.
When will I see results?
Many people notice improved glow and texture after just one session. Most patients begin seeing subtle changes around treatment 5 or 6. Visible reduction in lines and wrinkles typically appears after completing the full 10-treatment series.
Is there any downtime?
No! You can return to normal activities immediately. You may have slight redness for 1-2 hours, but there's no recovery period needed.
Can facial acupuncture help with acne or acne scars?
Yes! Facial acupuncture can improve acne by addressing underlying hormonal imbalances, reducing inflammation, and supporting skin healing. It's also effective for softening acne scars over time.
What should I do to prepare for my appointment?
Come with a clean face (no makeup if possible). Stay hydrated, eat a light meal beforehand, and wear comfortable clothing. Avoid alcohol and excessive sun exposure during the duration of your treatment.
How is facial acupuncture different from regular acupuncture?
Facial acupuncture uses specialized techniques focused on the face, neck, and décolletage, combined with body points that support skin health and address underlying imbalances. It requires advanced training in cosmetic needling techniques and facial muscle manipulation.
What age should I start facial acupuncture?
There's no "right" age! People in their 30s often use it preventively to slow aging. Those in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond see excellent rejuvenation results. Whether you're looking to prevent or reverse signs of aging, cosmetic acupuncture can help you maintain gorgeous skin at any age.
If you're looking for a natural, holistic approach to facial rejuvenation that enhances your beauty while supporting your overall health, facial acupuncture offers a safe, effective solution.
